       The Government of Tamil Nadu celebrates the birth anniversaries and observes the death anniversaries of the leaders who fought for the freedom of our motherland India, the leaders worked towards the betterment of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil savants who contributed to our mother tongue which had gained classical language status in order to remember their ideals, principles and sacrifice to pass on the same to young generation.

       Hon’ble Governor, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Hon’ble Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly, Government officials and heirs of those leaders participate in these functions and pay respects to them by garlanding their statues and showering flower petals on their portraits. The Government also celebrates the birthday of the leaders and centenary celebrations, which are announced from time to time.

       39 statues of leaders in Chennai and 79 statues of leaders in the other Districts are garlanded and paid floral tributes.

VALLUVAR KOTTAM

       Muthamizharignar Kalaignar envisioned Valluvar Kottam as a way to showcase the glory of Ayyan Thiruvalluvar, who authored Thirukkural, the Universal Book of Principles.

       Muthamizharignar Kalaignar laid the foundation stone for Valluvar Kottam, a historic monument, a landmark of Chennai with artistic beauty and majestic appearance, on 27.04.1973.

       Valluvar Kottam was inaugurated by the then President of India Thiru. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on 15.04.1976.

       Muthamizharignar Kalaignar visited the Valluvar Kottam for the first time on 27th January after swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the year 1989 and which was a historical moment.

       After the present Government took charge, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu visited the Valluvar Kottam and garlanded the statue of Ayyan Thiruvalluvar on “Thiruvalluvar Day”.

 

SPECIAL FUNCTIONS CELEBRATED BY THE GOVERNMENT

       The Birth Anniversary of Annal Gandhi Adigal is being celebrated by the Government every year on October 2. Accordingly, on 02.10.2022, the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Hon’ble Ministers, Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly, Representatives of the Local Bodies, other dignitaries and myself as the Minister for Information and Publicity participated in the function where the Annal Gandhi Adigal statue was unveiled and floral tribute was paid to his portrait at the Egmore Museum campus, Chennai.

       During the evening of 02.10.2022, at the function held in the premises of Gandhi Mandapam, Chennai, the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu distributed prizes to the school students who had won in various competitions. The cultural programmes by school students and folk artists had performed in the function. Previously, the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu inaugurated the photo exhibition which exhibits the life history of Annal Gandhi Adigal. The Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Hon’ble Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Hon’ble Minister for School Education, myself as the Minister for Information and Publicity and the officials of the Information and Public Relations Department had participated in the function and visited the photo exhibition.

       As per to the order of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, every year on January 26 and August 15, the memorials of leaders who strived for the freedom of the nation are decorated with lights and the statues of the leaders are garlanded in order to pay tribute.

       Thiruvalluvar Thirunal and Tamil Nadu Government Awards ceremony is celebrated every year on Thiruvalluvar Day by the Tamil Development Department and Information Department. Thiruvalluvar Award, Thanthai Periyar Award, Perarignar Anna Award, Annal Ambedkar Award, Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Award, Mahakavi Bharathiyar Award, Paavendhar Bharathidasan Award, Tamil Thendral Thiru Vi.Ka Award and Ki.Aa.Pe Viswanatham Award are awarded to the Tamil Scholars for their contribution to the Tamil Language and its glory.

       Thiruvalluvar Thirunal and Tamil Nadu Government Awards ceremony were conducted and the programme was headed by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 16.01.2023 at Valluvar Kottam, Chennai.

TAMIL NADU DAY

       The linguists and leaders strongly advocated for changing the State's name from Madras Presidency to Tamil Nadu. In particular, Thiru. Sankaralinganar took his life through hunger strike for the same cause.

       After swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Perarignar Anna, at the State Legislative Assembly, on 18.07.1967, renamed the Madras Presidency as Tamil Nadu. From then onward, our State is called as “Tamil Nadu”.

       The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced the Tamil Nadu Day will be celebrated each year on July 18. Following that, on 18.07.2022, 'Tamil Nadu Day' was celebrated at Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai. At this function, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu delivered his special address through video conferencing.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

       A Government Order has been issued to celebrate the birthday of “Mamannar Rajaraja Chozhan” every year as a District function at Thanjavur from 2022 onwards.

       To commemorate the 50th death anniversary of Mootharignar Rajaji, on behalf of the Information and Public Relations Department, a special photo exhibition was setup for the people, aimed at exhibiting his various historical photographs related to his politics, literature, administration and life history at Anna Centenary Library, Chennai from 25.12.2022 to 01.01.2023. The Hon’ble Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare inaugurated and visited the exhibition.

       The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu visited the special photo exhibition on 26.12.2022 along with the Hon'ble Minister for Water Resources, Hon'ble Minister for Rural Development, Hon'ble Minister for Higher Education and Hon'ble Minister for Public Works and as the Minister for this Department, I also visited the exhibition on 26.12.2022.

       The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu launched new schemes under “7 Goals of Inclusive Growth and Prosperity” and also laid the foundation stone for several hospital buildings, distributed appointment orders and welfare assistance given by the Government to the beneficiaries, in the function conducted successfully by the Information and Public Relations Department, at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium, Chennai, on 28.02.2023.

       To mark the Birth Centenary of renowned playback singer T.M. Soundararajan, in a way of honouring him, West Circular Road, Mandaveli, where his residence is located, has been renamed as T.M. Soundararajan Road and the Hon’ble Chief Minister unveiled the new name board of the road through Video Conferencing on 24.03.2023.

       Also, according to the order of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, to celebrate the birth anniversary of Thiru. T.M. Soundararajan, I inaugurated a music concert exclusively featuring the songs sung by him, which was held at the Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai, at a cost of Rs.12 lakhs.
