       Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute is a leading Technical Training Institute educating Film Technology and techniques of Film Production and aesthetics of Art.

       Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute functions under the Information and Public Relations Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. This institute functions in an area of 15.25 acres. This is the one and only institute in India which offers Bachelor’s degree in film studies.

       Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute is a pioneer Institute and has carved its own niche in the filmmaking industry and organization. This Institute was functioning as part of the branch in the Central Polytechnic Institute from 1945. Thereafter, from 1960 onwards it emerged as a separate Institute. From 09.08.2021 onwards this Institute was renamed as “Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute''.

DEGREE COURSES

       The Diploma Courses offered by this Institute with the accreditation of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi were upgraded as four years duration Degree Course from Academic Year 2016-2017 as Bachelor of Visual Arts in affiliation with Tamil Nadu Dr. J Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University.

       Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) degree is about to be awarded from 2019-2020 instead of Diploma in Film Technology (DFT) awarded till 2018.

STUDENTS ADMISSION

       During every academic year 14 students are admitted in each of the above six courses and a total of 84 students are admitted for all the courses in this Institute. Tuition fees of Rs.15,000/-, Special fees of Rs.2,000/- and Development fees of Rs.1,000/- have been fixed. SC/ST students are fully exempted from tuition fees.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR FILMS PRODUCED BY STUDENTS

       The Government has raised the amount for the production of Students Documentary Films from Rs.15,000 to Rs.50,000/- from the financial year 2017-18. Every year, the final year students from all the 6 courses are formed as 14 units and each unit produce a short film as the final film project.

SHORT FILM AWARD

       The students of Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute is presented with “Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute Students Award” which consists of One Sovereign Gold Medal, Cash Award of Rs.5,000/- and a Memento in the category of Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Editor, Best Sound Recordist and Best Colourist for their short films.

AWARDS

       The Short films produced by the students of Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute has been screened in Chennai International Film Festival and Rs.10,000/- was awarded to the selected short films.

TRAINING ON LATEST TECHNOLOGY

       In order to keep pace with the changing technology in the film industry, the students of Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Institute are trained with the latest equipment and accessories on par with the film industry by hiring the latest equipment at an annual allocation of Rupees 1 Crore and 50 Lakh.
